Colour me big

If a new room feels small, try these ideas to make the most of what you have

Go for dark hues

Small rooms don’t always need to be painted in light colours. It all depends on the room’s use. If it’s cosiness you’re after, a very dark blue can be extremely effective.

Create the illusion of height

Paint your wall colour up to 10cm below the ceiling, then paint everything above white. The extra band of white will visually stretch the ceiling height, making the room appear taller. Deep teal tones look smart against a crisp white.

Try a tonal scheme

Choose fabrics in similar shades to your wall paint to help them blend in rather than stand out. Shades of green work very well.

Define your woodwork

Woodwork should be one shade darker than the wall colour. Lighter grey walls with darker grey woodwork set an elegant tone.

Broaden your corridors

A dark colour at either end helps to draw the eye so the space appears less stretched. Go for a dramatic look with red.
